A man suspected of shooting three people in Long Beach fired an AK-47 at officers during a chase early Tuesday, Sept. 1, before crashing in downtown Los Angeles, police said.

The chase started after a shooting around 12:25 a.m. on Aquarium Way in Long Beach that wounded three men. Officers spotted the suspect's car, and the driver refused to stop and headed north on the 710 Freeway.

During the roughly 20-minute pursuit, the driver fired at officers, and one officer fired back through his windshield. No one was hit.

The chase ended on South Santa Fe Avenue near 12th Street, where the car sheared a fire hydrant and crashed into a fence. Officers with rifles took cover as the driver walked out with his hands up. Officers fired a less-lethal round before taking him into custody, then moved in behind a ballistic shield to clear the car. LAPD officers also responded to the crash scene.

Julian Gandarilla Ocampo, 34, of Long Beach, has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, evading police and owning an assault weapon. He has pleaded not guilty.
