WEST HOLLYWOOD — A 36-inch water main under Sunset Boulevard burst early Thursday, July 16, sending water rushing through West Hollywood streets for hours and flooding parking garages, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said.
The break began near Palm Avenue and Harratt Street around 3:55 a.m. The pipe was installed in 1916, according to LADWP. About two dozen cars flooded in one parking garage, and a sinkhole opened at Holloway Drive and Palm Avenue, CBS Los Angeles reported.
Crews had to close the underground valves slowly because pressure in the system is highest at night, LADWP said. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies blocked off flooded streets, and Sunset Boulevard and several nearby streets were closed. The utility set up a claims station for residents with property damage.
