LOS ANGELES — A fire tore through a three-story apartment building in East Hollywood early Thursday, Oct. 15, displacing 90 residents, fire officials said.
Firefighters were called at 4:24 a.m. to 560 N. Kingsley Drive. The fire started in the basement and spread through the walls to the upper floors and roof, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The building dates to 1924, and LAFD said older buildings like it often lack fire breaks.
Firefighters climbed a ladder to reach an elderly woman on a third-floor fire escape and helped her down. LAPD officers helped evacuate the rest of the building.
Nearly 180 firefighters knocked down the fire at 7:19 a.m. One woman was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Sixty units were declared uninhabitable. The Red Cross is helping residents find housing, and the cause is under investigation.
