LOS ANGELES — More than 150 LAPD officers surrounded a street takeover of more than 700 people in Harbor Gateway early Saturday, Sept. 5, in what the department called "Operation Street Sweeper."
The crowd gathered at Figueroa Street and Alondra Boulevard. Officers moved in from several directions and blocked off the area as a police helicopter circled overhead. A fleet of tow trucks and buses was brought in to haul away cars and the people who were arrested. Sheriff's deputies and CHP officers also helped.
Police arrested 69 people and impounded 200 vehicles. Officers also wrote 570 citations, 442 to spectators and 128 to minors out past curfew, and recovered seven guns. Tow trucks were still hauling cars away after sunrise.
"This is not harmless fun. This is criminal behavior," LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said.
